If you’re a seasoned entrepreneur and your website/copy/marketing materials feel just a little off, this post is for you. This post is also for you if you’re just starting your business or if you’re a branding/marketing junkie like me.
So let’s be honest here, branding can seem super confusing at first because there isn’t any one thing you can point to and say, “That’s a brand.” Your logo and your tagline are just one tiny aspect of your brand.
Eventually your brand will translate into all kinds of marketing touch-points such as business cards, FB ads, Thank You Cards and more (but that’s a post for another day).
What branding IS and Isn’t…
Your brand is the PROMISE of an EXPERIENCE. It’s basically an opportunity to create meaningful and thought-provoking connections with your clients. When your brand is powerful it creates in you a lot of focus, intention and energy for you in building your business.
A brand is NOT a logo.
A lot of people see a logo in their minds, and they think the logo is the brand. Actually, it’s not!
All great personal brands clearly answer these three questions:
Who am I?
What do I stand for?
What am I an expert in or at?
Pretty simple huh? It is but it isn’t. Answering these questions correctly requires really sitting down and taking the time to dig deep. Even if you outsourced your brand creation to a marketing consultant, unless YOU understand the soul of your brand yourself; writing copy on your own will feel uncomfortable. Plus planning and executing a marketing plan solo will feel like going up a steep hill on a rainy day.
Here’s how you know if your brand is authentic or not…
If you feel any of these then chances are that you’re off-brand somewhere:
…you shouldn’t feel inauthentic in your sales or marketing messaging
… you shouldn’t feel like a fraud and like you’re trying to be someone you’re not
…you shouldn’t feel like your website or marketing materials are “off”
…you shouldn’t constantly be comparing yourself to others in your industry/field
Before it can be a deep experience for anyone else, it should be a deep experience for YOU.
Now, I wish I could say this is a totally intuitive process because after all…it’s YOUR brand. But it’s not so easy.
For example, lets say you’re a baking goddess. Your expertise lies in knowing the best flours to bake with and you might even know how to make your own butter. However, knowing the ins-and-outs of your brand requires a lot of focused intention and answering some deeper question.
That’s why my favorite place to start is by knowing what your Brand Archetype is.
Archetypes are images, characteristics and qualities that are imprinted in your own human psyche and are immediately understood because they are universal. For example some of the archetypes are The Ruler, The Romantic, The Explorer etc.
